“Sympathy Gets Old”

“…oh, what fun it is to ride on a one-horse open sleigh…”

McGuire downed his fifth shot and scowled at the counter. “Dear God, make it stop.”

Polishing off a glass a few feet away, Nate couldn’t help smirking. “I take it you’re not a Christmas person?”

“I am, but after hearing these guys sing, I think that’s going to change soon,” replied the sheriff, reaching for the bottle of rum. Nate grabbed it before he could touch it, pouring him another shot and setting the bottle down out of reach.

“Sorry,” he said. “I’d turn them out if it was up to me, but I’m not the boss here, and he already told me to ‘let the Christmas spirit flow.’”

It was afternoon, but it was so cold it might as well have been midnight. Working at the bar wasn’t exactly how Nate figured he’d be spending Christmas Eve, but here he was, attending to the few customers who’d showed up. Mac’s Pub was almost empty but for the sheriff, a couple of red-faced men with snow shovels, and, of course, the choristers who’d practically waltzed in minutes ago and decided to share their music with whoever would listen.

The music was terrible, but Nate didn’t mind. McGuire clearly did, though. The two other shovelers were either deaf or simply didn’t give a rat’s rear end about the choristers.

“How’s Christmas Eve going for you?” Nate asked McGuire.

“I wouldn’t be sitting here if it was going great, that’s for sure,” McGuire said, adjusting himself on his stool. “I’d be at home, kicking back and praying Santa was real so he’d make my year with an early salary. But no, I’m still working, and I’m starting to doubt I’ll get any rest tomorrow what with everything going on.”

Everything going on. He was talking about the runaway elf problem. Ariana. Nate swallowed. Things still hadn’t changed much in the past week. More of the town’s residents were indoors now, spending time with their families. Even Melvina returned home earlier than usual these days.

His sister had been in a considerably bad mood ever since she spotted Ariana lying on her couch that night. Nate and Melvina had only gotten into a few more arguments since then, which he thought was quite fortunate. He could tell she was mad at him, and not once had she said a word to the elf living under her roof, but she hadn’t asked Ariana to leave. If Nate didn’t know better, he’d have been worried his sister was planning to rat her out to the sheriff, or worse.

When he confronted her about it, he’d been surprised to get a response.

“Don’t assume I’m letting her stay forever,” Melvina had replied. “Once this problem of yours is over, I want her gone. She’s already a threat to both of us as it is.”

“I understand,” he’d replied, not wanting to start an argument. “Look, I’m sorry I brought her here without letting you know first. But once I found out who she was, I—”

“You couldn’t let anything happen to her.
